Diabetes

Diabetes is a disease in which the body does not produce or properly use insulin. Insulin is a
hormone that is needed to convert sugar, starches and other food into energy needed for daily
life. The cause of diabetes continues to be a mystery, although both genetics and environmental
factors such as obesity and lack of exercise appear to play roles.
There are 23.6 million children and adults in the United States, or 7.8% of the population, who
have diabetes. While an estimated 17.9 million have been diagnosed with diabetes, unfortunately,
5.7 million people (or nearly one quarter) are unaware that they have the disease.

Blood Sugar Basics

What You Should Know About Blood Sugar. People with type 2 diabetes may control their blood sugar levels by following a diabetes treatment plan. Such a plan may include exercise, healthy eating and oral diabetes medications. But that might not be enough to keep your blood sugar levels on target. If not, your doctor may suggest adding insulin to your treatment plan. If you have type 2 diabetes, you should know the basics of blood sugar.

You should know:

  • WHY checking your blood sugar level is important
  • WHAT the warning signs of low blood sugar are and what you need to do when you have them
  • WHEN different types of insulin should be taken, and how they help manage blood sugar control
  • HOW blood sugar control may benefit you, including reducing risks of diabetes-related complications

Find out more about the basics of blood sugar. And learn how adding insulin to your overall diabetes treatment plan might help you manage your blood sugar levels. Talk to your doctor about your blood sugar levels and if insulin would be right for you.

Important Safety Information for Insulin

Possible side effects may include blood sugar levels that are too low, injection site reactions, and allergic reactions, including itching and rash. Tell your doctor about all other medicines and supplements you are taking because they could change the way insulin works. Glucose monitoring is recommended for all patients with diabetes.
